The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has encouraged voters to make informed choices in the upcoming local council elections scheduled for February in the capital territory.

Wike assured that under his leadership, the FCT Administration is dedicated to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a fair and transparent manner, free from violence and illegal activities.

In his New Year message to FCT residents, the minister stated, “The year 2026 holds special significance for us as it marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Federal Capital Territory. The golden jubilee celebration is a tribute to the vision of our founding fathers and the resilience of Nigerians who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to living in peace and unity over the past 50 years.

“The New Year is also crucial politically for the residents of the Federal Capital and indeed for all Nigerians. In just a few weeks, elections for the Area Councils will commence in the six Area Councils of the Territory, and eligible voters are encouraged to exercise their rights to select their local government leaders. I urge everyone to vote wisely.

“The Federal Capital Territory Administration is devoted to ensuring that the electoral process occurs in a fair and transparent environment, free from violence and illegal activities.”

Wike also assured that the FCTA would foster a supportive atmosphere for all political activities in 2026.

“Later this year, campaign activities are anticipated to begin nationwide in preparation for Nigeria’s general elections in 2027. As the center of government, the Federal Capital Territory will be bustling with activity during this time. Rest assured, the FCT Administration will continue to create a conducive environment for the orderly hosting of all political events leading up to and related to the general elections as well.

“To the wonderful people of the FCT, as we embark on this exciting year, let us proceed with unwavering determination, steadfast faith, and a unified purpose that consistently leads to the peace, prosperity, and progress that the FCT truly desires.

“On this special occasion of the New Year celebration, I once again wish you and your families a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous 2026,” he concluded.
