The National Emergency Management Agency has concluded its coordinated emergency response following a fire incident at the Jos Terminus Market.
The development was disclosed in a statement shared on the agency’s official page on March 15 2026.
According to the agency, the fire broke out a few minutes before 10pm on Saturday, March 14, in a section of the market located in Jos North Local Government Area.
A joint assessment carried out by NEMA and other responding agencies after the incident showed that several temporary stalls and lock-up shops were either partially or completely destroyed by the fire.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire may have been triggered by a power surge.
Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service and the Plateau State Fire Service, deployed fire engines to the scene and were able to contain the blaze before it spread to other sections of the market.
Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported during the incident.
Speaking during the response operation, the Head of NEMA, Jos Operations Office, Bintu Wana, conveyed the sympathy of the agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, to traders affected by the fire.
“The Head of NEMA, Jos Operations Office, Hajiya Bintu Wana, who led the NEMA, also conveyed the sympathy of the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, to the market leadership and traders affected by the incident, particularly those who lost their shops and sources of livelihood,” the statement read.
Several agencies and stakeholders took part in the emergency response and damage assessment, including the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, alongside vigilante groups, market authorities, traders associations and community volunteers.
Officials of the Plateau State Government and market leaders commended the swift response by the emergency agencies, noting that the quick intervention helped limit the extent of the damage.
