Operatives from the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have confiscated a total of 1,455 kilograms of cannabis after a suspected drug trafficking cartel allegedly abandoned their two Sienna buses in the state.
According to DAILY POST, the NDLEA Commander in the state, Mitchell Ofoyeju, shared this information on Monday in a statement made available to reporters in Benin City.
Ofoyeju stated that the seizure occurred on October 29, 2025, along the Okhokho-Isi community route in the Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state.
He mentioned that no suspects were apprehended during the operation.
The NDLEA Edo State Command has intensified its operational efforts, prompting members of a drug trafficking cartel to abandon two Sienna buses carrying 1,455 kg of cannabis.
“The seizure took place on October 29, 2025, at approximately 3:00 AM, when a dedicated team of officers intercepted two Toyota Sienna buses suspected of transporting a significant quantity of narcotics along the Okhokho-ISI community route in the Uhunmwode Local Government Area,” he explained.
He noted that both buses began their journey from Okpuje, a community allegedly notorious for cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
The NDLEA state Commander also alleged that the first vehicle seized, a light blue Toyota Sienna with registration number EPE 545 EV, was found to be carrying an impressive 666 kilograms of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa.
He further claimed that a dark ash Toyota Sienna bearing registration number ABC 142 CD was also intercepted, containing 789 kilograms of the same illegal substance.
“Unfortunately, no suspects were apprehended during the operation, as the individuals responsible abandoned the vehicles and fled, leaving behind the significant drug evidence.
“The NDLEA is actively pursuing leads and conducting thorough investigations aimed at bringing the traffickers to justice.
Ofoyeju, however, cautioned drug traffickers operating in the state to refrain from engaging in illegal activities, emphasizing that ongoing operations and investigations demonstrate the command’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug trafficking in the area.
“Those who believe they can evade the law and exploit our communities through the illicit drug trade should reconsider. We are prepared and dedicated to enforcing the law with exceptional measures against harmful substances and their distributors,” he warned.
The Commander also assured the public that the agency remains vigilant in its patrols and operational capabilities.
He emphasized that the Command is collaborating with local communities to ensure safety and promote a drug abuse-free society.
He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking and to actively participate in the fight against drugs in Edo State.
While noting that recent events serve as a clear reminder, he urged all individuals involved in drug trafficking to cease their illegal activities immediately, pledging that the agency would not relent in its mission to foster a drug-free environment in Edo State.
