The September 11 tragedy remains as the only time Article 5 of Nato’s treaty has ever been triggered.

Several non-US allied nations rushed to Washington‘s side following the Article 5 declaration which would go on to result in the deaths of hundreds of brave foreign troops.

Rutte sat down with Trump to inform him about the sacrifices Nato has made as he tried to keep the US on side after a troubling few weeks for the alliance over Greenland.

The Dutchman, 58, told Trump: “There’s one thing I heard you say yesterday and today.

“You were not absolutely sure Europeans would come to the rescue of the US if you will be attacked.

“Let me tell you, they will and they did in Afghanistan.

“For every two Americans who paid the ultimate price, there was one soldier from another Nato country who did not come back to his family – from the Netherlands, from Denmark and particularly from other countries.”

Rutte added: “So you can be assured, absolutely, if ever the United States was under attack, your allies will be with you.

“There is an absolute guarantee. I really want to tell you that because it pains me if you think it is not.”

Britain lost 457 soldiers with another 2,188 injured out in the Middle East with 159 Canadians, 90 French and 62 Germans all killed in Afghanistan.

Several other Nato allies also recorded losses during the gruelling 20-year conflict.

Rutte’s comments came after Trump held a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland yesterday.

During the lengthy talk, Trump said: “I’m not sure that they [Nato allies] would be there for us if we gave them the call.

“I know them all very well. I’m not sure that they’d be there.

“I know we’d be there for them. I don’t know that they would be there for us.”

Earlier this month, Trump also said on Truth Social: “We will always be there for Nato, even if they won’t be there for us.”

The US leader also said that members of the alliance would all be “speaking German and a little Japanese” if America didn’t help in World War Two.

It comes as Trump and Nato leaders continue to disagree over Greenland.

In Davos, the US president doubled-down on his insistence that .

He even appeared to threaten European leaders with economic retaliation if they didn’t back his plan.

In the hours after his speech, the White House boss took to Truth Social to inform his followers that he and Rutte had managed to thrash out the initial framework for a future deal involving Greenland.

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO nations,” Trump wrote.

“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.

“Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland.”
