SUSPECTED human remains have been discovered in public woodland near a busy A-road.

Members of the public raised the alarm after they made the grim discovery on Saturday near Rainworth, .

have since launched an investigation into the find and are working to identify the “skeletal” remains.

A cordon has been put in place around the area off the A617 Rainworth bypass as specialist forensic officers work at the scene.

Investigators said a dedicated team of cops is working to establish the circumstances around the discovery.

The road remains open while detectives carry out their probe into the find.

Anyone with concerns is asked to come forward and speak to .

Detective Inspector Matt Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Any discovery of human remains is taken extremely seriously.

“A thorough is being carried out and we are keeping an open mind at this time.

“It is important for me to stress that this is also likely to take us some time yet.

“There will still be a scene remaining that will be guarded by police officers for a number of days while our work continues.

“As our investigation progresses over the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week, residents can expect to see an increased presence in the area. I would encourage anyone with any concerns to please come and speak to us.

“We would like to thank the public for their patience. We know the effect this investigation will have had on residents living in the area.
