Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has shared that his father initially opposed his choice to pursue a career in comedy.
In an honest interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father envisioned him as a lawyer. However, after not gaining admission to study law, he opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies instead.
He reminisced about discovering his comedic talent while attending the University of Port Harcourt, where he began creating skits.
The comedian noted that when his father learned about his skit-making, he regretted financing his education and referred to comedy as a “foolish profession.”
Sabinus stated, “Initially, my dad did not want me to pursue this path; he wanted me to be a lawyer. I did my best, but I couldn't secure admission to study law. Consequently, I chose Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport.
“It was during my time on campus that I discovered skit-making and decided to give it a try. At that time, I wasn't earning any money.
“After graduating, my dad was unaware that I was involved in comedy because I kept it a secret. It was a year after finishing school that he began seeing my name on comedy show posters. My sisters confirmed to him that I was now a comedian. He was quite upset and exclaimed, ‘What comedy? Foolish profession. Look at the son I sent to become a lawyer.'”
Sabinus added that his father eventually gave him his blessing once he began sharing his earnings from comedy.
