A police cordon is expected to remain in place at Adnitt Road and Dallington Road as the investigation continues.
Members of the public have been advised to avoid the area until further notice.
Police are urging anyone with footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Ryan Catling from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team, said: “This is a fast-moving investigation with several scenes in place as we work to establish what has happened.
“As we do this work, I’m appealing for anyone who may have been in Adnitt Road and the surrounding area from 6pm last night and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously to contact us.
“We also want to speak to anyone who may have seen two people acting suspiciously in Dallington Park from 7pm onwards.”
Mr Catling added: “We know this incident will cause a lot of concern for the local community and I want to offer reassurance that we are doing all we can to establish what has happened and identify those responsible.
“Our neighbourhood policing team will be conducting patrols throughout the day, and I would encourage anyone with concerns to approach one of our officers who will be happy to help.”
“As part of our investigation we want to hear from anyone in Adnitt Road or the surrounding streets who may have captured any footage on CCTV or doorbells, or indeed if anyone driving in the area captured anything on a dashcam.
“Any small piece of information or footage is useful and could be the vital detail we need as part of our inquiry.”
