A MUM-TO-BE who was told at a private pregnancy scan that she was having a boy was left stunned by the results of her next, NHS, ultrasound.

However, in a video on her TikTok page , she explained that when she went for another scan on the NHS, she was told the baby is actually a girl.
“I said to the girl, ‘Can you check the gender?'” Julie recalled of the scan, remembering her reaction as the nurse told her and husband Ross that they was expecting another daughter.
The technician then judged by her and her husband’s faces that it wasn’t “what you’ve been told”, at which point she doubled checked and confirmed it’s definitely a baby girl.
Julie and Ross then contacted the original clinic, who asked them to come in for another check.
They did that, at which point the clinic admitted they’d “made a mistake”, and it was a girl.
“I know like everybody goes on about how it’s so important that the baby’s healthy and it doesn’t matter about the gender, but from our side of things like this has affected us a little bit,” Julie said.
“Because we already have our beautiful little girl Hayley and when we were told it was a boy, we were absolutely over the moon.
“We were like, ‘Oh my God we’re going to have one of each, it’s going to be amazing!’ and we’re actually having another girl.”
Julie added that if at the initial gender scan she was told it was a girl, she would have been “buzzing” and “absolutely fine” with it.
And while she feels “guilty for feeling sad” about not having a son, she can’t help it.
“We’d bought stuff, we’d told all family and friends, we’d done the gender reveal, we’d started looking at names, we were so excited for this little baby boy and then it’s all just been flipped on its head,” she sighed.
They’d also told their daughter she was going to have a brother, so had to explain the mix-up to her, while people they’d ordered things from were all very “accommodating” in changing items from blue to pink.
“I feel bad for feeling sad that it’s not a boy because obviously I’m just buzzing that my baby’s healthy but I feel like it’s okay to feel that way,” she continued.
“Gender disappointment is something that is so not spoke about enough – mums and dads and family members are made to feel guilty for having disappointment regarding your baby’s gender.
“We wouldn’t have been disappointed in our baby’s gender if we had been told the right one.”
However, Julie concluded her video by saying she’s come to terms with the news now, and is in her “girl era”.
What’s the Deal with Gender Reveals & Why is Everyone Having Them?
What Is A Gender Reveal?
Gender reveal parties are celebrations where expectant parents announce the sex of their baby in a creative and often dramatic way.
These events have gained significant popularity, especially through social media.
The trend began in the late 2000s and has since exploded in popularity.
The concept was popularised by parents who wanted to share their excitement with family and friends in a memorable and engaging way.
Common Methods:
- Cakes: Cutting a cake filled with either blue or pink filling.
- Balloons: Popping a balloon to release colored confetti.
- Smoke Bombs: Releasing colored smoke.
- Piñatas: Breaking a piñata to reveal colored candies or confetti.
- Fireworks: Using fireworks to display blue or pink colors.
Why Are They So Popular?
- Social Media Influence: Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube have amplified the trend, with many parents posting videos and photos that go viral.
- Milestone Celebration: It’s an additional way for parents to celebrate a significant milestone during pregnancy.
- Creativity: These events offer an outlet for parents to be creative and personalize their announcement.
- Community Sharing: They provide an opportunity to include extended family and friends in the pregnancy journey.
Controversies:
- Safety Concerns: Some gender reveal methods have led to accidents and even wildfires.
- Environmental Impact: The use of non-biodegradable materials and fireworks can have environmental consequences.
- Inclusivity: There’s growing awareness and sensitivity towards non-binary and transgender identities, leading to criticism that these events can be exclusionary.
Despite the controversies, gender reveal parties continue to evolve.
Some parents are opting for more eco-friendly and inclusive ways to celebrate, while others are choosing to forgo the tradition altogether.
In summary, gender reveals are a modern trend driven by social media, creativity, and the desire to celebrate milestones.
However, they also come with their share of controversies, prompting some to reconsider how they choose to share their baby news.
“I’m going to have two precious little baby girls and it’s going to be amazing,” she smiled.
“Didn’t see this one coming,” Julie captioned her video.
