Fuelled with fury, she grabbed a knife and launched into a bloody attack – reportedly slashing him multiple times.
During the struggle, the victim fought back and managed to wound her hand with a serrated blade before being killed.
Silva then decapitated Santos before dragging his body to the bathroom.
His severed head was stashed inside a backpack later found by in the living room.
The incident happened in Itaquá, on the outskirts of the Brazilian city of São Paulo.
After the attack, Silva reportedly rang relatives and her ex-husband, the father of her two young children, to confess her .
She then shared photos and videos of Santos’ body as proof of what she had done.
It was her mother – the grandmother of the two children – who called the police to report on what her daughter had done.
Detectives say the suspect, who has been remanded in custody pending an ongoing murder probe, had cleaned both the alleged murder weapon and the crime scene before they arrived.
Municipal public security chiefs confirmed in a statement that a 24-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday morning in a neighbourhood called Chacara Cuiaba.
“Military police were called to the scene and upon arrival, they found the suspect had stabbed the victim with a knife,” they said.
“She confessed to the crime and was detained and the case was registered at the local police station.”
Police confirmed the victim had suffered “multiple stab wounds, as well as decapitation.”
On the night of the attack, the couple had spent the night drinking with a friend.
Silva later told officers that she had been lying on the living room floor – apparently asleep – when she saw her partner opening the younger child’s nappies.
She claimed she reacted instantly – acting in self-defence – and stabbed him.
Authorities are investigating the case as a homicide, as well as procedural fraud and the concealment of a body.
Prosecutors have requested that her arrest be upgraded to pre-trial detention, arguing there is not enough evidence to support her claim that she acted in self-defence.
