A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has advised the National Assembly against moving the general elections to 2026.
Oguntoyinbo described this proposal as an attempt to disrupt the entire electoral process.
He made this statement available to DAILY POST on Thursday.
DAILY POST reports that the National Assembly had made a proposal regarding this.
However, Oguntoyinbo emphasized that such a decision would hinder proper preparations for the elections by various political parties, prospective candidates, and the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He stated that the National Assembly should not exert pressure on stakeholders, which include political parties, prospective candidates, and INEC.
He further noted that elections are serious matters that necessitate thorough preparation by INEC, political parties, and the candidates involved.
“I urge the National Assembly not to shift the 2027 elections to 2026. Elections are critical for national development. We should not rush political parties, prospective candidates, and INEC into hasty preparations,” he said.
“Elections demand careful and comprehensive planning, which requires time. Political parties need sufficient time and resources to select candidates, while candidates themselves need to prepare adequately.”
“We cannot remain in a perpetual election cycle; governance is essential for the country’s progress.”
“The National Assembly should be mindful of the serious negative consequences of advancing the 2027 elections to 2026,” he advised.
