Fernandes tapped the ball to Mount, who whipped a low driven shot under the Palace wall and into former United keeper ‘s near post in the 63rd minute.

While the move startled Palace, Mount also admitted he was somewhat caught off guard despite being told what to do by Fernandes.

Mount explained: “I said to him ‘I will roll it for you’. He said ‘no, you stay there’. Then I said, ‘you shoot’ because the sun was difficult today and it was causing a bit of a problem.

“I thought it would be difficult for Deano to see the ball from goal. But he said ‘stay there’ and then rolled it to me. You could see my reaction was a bit ‘ah, I need to get on the end of it’.

“He obviously said it but it was really quick. That is what helped out the situation because they didn’t see it coming. They didn’t see us talking.

“They were late to react, then it was about finding the little space in the wall. It is a bit of a disruption and then it hits the target.”

It marked Mount’s 50th career goal and sixth in a United shirt since his £60million move from in 2023.

And it came nine minutes after ‘s first league strike in a year had cancelled out ‘s retaken penalty opener on Sunday.

What delighted Mount most was completing a full 90 minutes in the Prem, a milestone he hadn’t achieved since his Chelsea appearance against Palace in January 2023.

He said: “It felt like a long time. That is a massive positive for me. I have been working hard recently and feel really good now.

“To get that 90 minutes under my belt is really positive. I will go into recovery now and go for the next game. I am very happy with that.

“I haven’t done it in a while, but I feel definitely capable of doing that. Whether I am starting on the bench or starting the game, you have to have the same mentality of coming on and having an effect on the game.”

TNT pundits and said a top-seven finish would mark incredible progress for a United side that suffered a record low Prem finish of 15th last season.

But Mount reckons United must focus on securing football next term.

The 26-year-old said: “It has been up and down but as a group we are in a lot better place, not just me personally, but as a group.

“We really need to kick on now and win more games. That is the most important thing now, to win.”

Acknowledging the dismal defeat to 10-man Everton on Monday, Mount added: “It is time to kick on now and shoot for those top four positions.

“It was a difficult result last game but to come back and win here was massively important.”
