Starting today, women can obtain the morning-after pill at no cost from pharmacies throughout England.

Emergency contraception is available for free at most clinics, but it can be priced as high as £30 elsewhere.

This cost may have varied depending on whether your local council provided coverage.

The fee has now been eliminated for individuals without a doctor's or other prescriptions at 10,000 community pharmacies.

Dr. Sue Mann, the director, stated: “This is a significant advancement in making reproductive healthcare more accessible.”

The morning-after pill is a form of emergency contraception used following unprotected intercourse or if regular contraception fails.

It can be taken at home but must be used within three to five days, with earlier usage increasing its effectiveness.

It functions by preventing or delaying the release of an egg and does not induce an abortion.

“Women across England encounter an unjust postcode lottery when seeking emergency contraception, with access varying significantly based on their location,” remarked the health minister.

“By making this available at community pharmacies, we will ensure that all women can access this vital healthcare when needed, irrespective of their location or financial situation.”

While most GP surgeries and sexual health clinics already provide it free of charge, waiting for an appointment can diminish the pill's effectiveness.
