The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has refuted claims made by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who alleged that the federal government is neglecting ports outside of Lagos.
DAILY POST recalls that Obi criticized the recent approval of US$1 billion by the Federal Government for the modernization of the Apapa and TinCan Island seaports in Lagos.
He argued that Nigeria’s maritime development is disproportionately focused on Lagos, emphasizing that this latest initiative highlights the ongoing neglect of other significant ports throughout the country.
In response, Bolaji Akinola, spokesperson for the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, issued a statement on Wednesday, expressing that the ministry appreciates constructive dialogue but cautioned that Obi’s remarks were misleading.
Akinola affirmed that the government is dedicated to modernizing ports across the nation. He mentioned that the ministry has initiated procurement for the enhancement of ports in Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Onne, in addition to the ongoing upgrades at Apapa and TinCan Island ports.
“The Federal Government is working in partnership with state governments and private investors on new deep seaports in Bayelsa (Agge), Akwa Ibom (Ibom), Rivers (Bonny), and Cross River states.
“The Onitsha River Port in Anambra, developed by the National Inland Waterways Authority, serves as proof of efforts to decentralize port operations.
“Therefore, the federal government firmly states that Mr. Peter Obi’s assertion implying neglect of ports outside Lagos is both incorrect and misleading.
“The federal government’s policies and actions clearly reflect a balanced and inclusive approach to port development, guided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to enhance national food security, economic diversification, and regional prosperity by fully utilizing Nigeria’s maritime potential,” the statement concluded.
