The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged the Igbo community and all Nigerians to maintain composure following the conviction and sentencing of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, on terrorism charges.
The minister made this appeal on Friday through a statement shared on her verified X account.
She noted that the verdict was neither expected nor welcomed, yet it is now a reality that must be acknowledged.
She cautioned against actions that could increase tensions both within Nigeria and among the diaspora.
“There comes a time in the history of a people when calm is essential. I therefore advise the Igbo and all Nigerians that this is that time! It is crucial to exercise restraint in response to this situation.
“Any actions that could be seen as provoking and that may escalate the situation at home or abroad should be avoided. A word to the wise is sufficient,” she stated.
According to DAILY POST, the Federal High Court in Abuja, under the leadership of Justice James Omotosho, found Kanu guilty on Thursday on seven counts of terrorism.
The judge subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count, and five years on another, with all sentences to run concurrently.
