The Kebbi State Government has called for an inquiry into the withdrawal of military personnel from the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, just one hour before bandits attacked the school and abducted 25 students.

On Friday, Governor Nasir Idris made this request during a meeting with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, at the government house in Birnin Kebbi.

The minister visited the state following instructions from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who directed him to go to Kebbi and oversee the rescue efforts for the kidnapped girls.

In a statement, Governor Idris questioned the army's decision to withdraw the troops.

He asked, “What was the reason that the military personnel assigned to the school left their duty post by 3:00 AM, allowing the bandits to attack the school at 4:00 AM? Therefore, I urge the minister to investigate why the military retreated at such a critical time, despite having intelligence suggesting a possible attack.”

He stated that the state received intelligence about a potential assault on the school and convened an urgent security meeting, which resulted in personnel being dispatched to the location. He expressed concern that, despite having this intelligence, the attackers faced no opposition at that time.

Matawalle mentioned that he arrived with the Theatre Commander of Operation Fantsan Yamma, Maj.-Gen. Idris Warrah, along with high-ranking military officials to strengthen the ongoing efforts.

“We have gathered here to collaborate with security organizations to ensure the safe recovery of these girls. Therefore, we are seeking the assistance and support of the community and residents of Kebbi,” he stated.
