The Nigerian military has announced the identification of a significant individual involved in suicide bombing attacks in the North-East. Shariff Umar, also known as “Yusuf,” has been named as a primary coordinator of these operations.

This revelation came after a series of intelligence-led initiatives by the troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK).

In a statement issued on Saturday, OPHK’s Media Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, indicated that Umar was heavily engaged in the recruitment, training, and deployment of suicide bombers, along with managing the supply and transportation of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to targeted locations throughout the region.

Uba noted that this breakthrough was made possible following cordon-and-search operations conducted in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31, 2025, which resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals believed to be part of a suicide bombing network.

The military reported that investigations have connected Umar to multiple attacks and attempted attacks, including the December 24, 2025, suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque. “Our findings suggest that Shariff Umar played a significant role in that incident, where an accomplice named Adamu executed the attack by detonating a suicide vest,” Uba stated.

Moreover, the military disclosed that Umar was associated with a thwarted bombing plot in Damaturu, claiming that he personally provided IED components to the intended bomber before security forces intervened.

Further investigations have reportedly implicated Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, and his stepdaughter, Amina, who informed investigators that the suspected bomber had been seen at their home prior to the attack.

OPHK characterized these discoveries as vital, emphasizing that they reveal how terrorist organizations exploit familial relationships and community environments to mask their activities and evade detection.

“These findings highlight the degree to which terrorist networks take advantage of domestic and communal settings to operate,” Uba stated, stressing that such tactics complicate counter-terrorism efforts.

He urged the public to continue supporting security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities or individuals, emphasizing that collaboration between Operation HADIN KAI and local communities is crucial for dismantling terrorist networks and achieving lasting peace in the North-East.
