The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that Nigeria’s military intervention in the Benin Republic demonstrates the President’s strong commitment to upholding democracy and enhancing national security.
Onanuga made this assertion on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
He explained that Nigeria’s reaction to last week’s attempted coup in Benin was prompt, organized, and conducted solely at the request of the Beninese authorities.
“What transpired on Sunday and what occurred today clearly indicates that this government is dedicated to safeguarding democracy, not only in Nigeria but also among our neighboring countries,” he remarked.
“Furthermore, the release of the Papiri children illustrates that our security forces, including the armed forces, air force, and ground troops, are fully equipped to assist in protecting this nation,” he added.
He noted that President Patrice Talon personally reached out to Nigeria for assistance when the coup attempt unfolded.
“The government of Benin, under President Talon, sent two urgent notifications to Nigeria. The first request was for Nigeria to deploy fighter jets to assist them in overcoming the coup plotters. Following that, they again asked for ground troops,” he explained.
The presidential aide emphasized that the intervention aligns with ECOWAS regulations and reflects Tinubu’s longstanding commitment to preserving democratic governance throughout West Africa.
