HUNDREDS of migrants arrived yesterday from France after the longest hiatus in Channel crossings over the past seven years.

One group, primarily composed of men, was photographed on a vessel at Dover, with sources indicating that more than 500 may have crossed illegally.

The break meant these arrivals were the first since November 14 — marking the longest pause since a 48-day gap in autumn 2018.

December is typically one of the quietest months due to low temperatures, poor visibility, reduced daylight, and stormy weather.

Despite the recent lull, 2025 is expected to witness the second-highest annual number of crossings since records began in 2018.

To date, 39,294 migrants have made the illegal crossing to British shores, surpassing the 36,816 who crossed throughout the entire year of 2024.

The all-time high stands at 45,774 arrivals in 2022.

The UK government states that it has intensified efforts to address small boat crossings in recent months, although these measures are not anticipated to yield immediate results.

During a conference, Prime Minister Sir expressed his commitment to reducing the number of crossings by 2029.

A spokesperson added: “We have removed nearly 50,000 individuals who were in the country illegally, and our historic agreement with the French means that those arriving on small boats are now being returned.”
