MANCHESTER UNITED was eliminated from the third round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2014 following a disappointing 2-0 loss to Brighton.

This marks the earliest exit for United from both cup competitions since 1982, following the Grimsby debacle in August, resulting in consecutive trophyless seasons.

After three attempts at goal in the opening minutes, United was caught off guard when Brajan Gruda scored from a rebound within the first 12 minutes.

United attempted to respond, but their efforts were consistently thwarted by careless fouls or misplaced passes before former player Welbeck returned to haunt his old club with a superb finish in the 64th minute.

Benjamin Sesko provided a glimmer of hope with a header at the back post in the final eight minutes, but 18-year-old substitute Shea Lacey was SENT OFF during his FA Cup debut.

Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated the Manchester United players, who faced elimination at Old Trafford.

Senne Lammens – 5

Had little chance with the rebounded opener but was fortunate after failing to clear the ball and missing a chance later.

He was left exposed by his defense for Brighton’s second goal.

Diogo Dalot – 3

Extremely inconsistent and reverted to his worst form tonight. His lack of composure and heavy touch squandered an early opportunity.

He struggled with a silly flick at the edge of the box, allowing the Seagulls to attack his side repeatedly.

Lisandro Martinez – 6

Solid on the ball and strong in one-on-one situations but was part of the back three that lost focus on Welbeck’s goal.

Leny Yoro – 5

Returned to the starting lineup after previous mishaps in the last two winless matches. He started strongly with significant headed clearances but struggled during both goals.

The France under-21 defender appeared to be out of position as he was caught too far from Welbeck.

Patrick Dorgu – 6

A mixed performance. He seemed more at ease after a shaky start to the season and showed improvement in forward areas.

After overcoming a rough beginning, he delivered strong crosses to Sesko when United fell behind. However, the 21-year-old frequently conceded lazy fouls and was responsible for the second goal.

Manuel Ugarte – 6

Continuing his good form, he executed simple tasks well and moved the ball effectively.

However, he was guilty of scrambling inside United’s box during the first half.

Kobbie Mainoo – 7

Displayed a noticeable energy in his first start since the Grimsby incident last August. His runs and aggression added a new dynamic to midfield in the first half.

It was refreshing to see his skillful play in tight spaces, although he faded after the break. He was substituted to applause after receiving a textbook yellow card.

Mason Mount – 5

The setup did not favor Mount as he played on the right wing. He hardly touched the ball and lacked sharpness when opportunities did arise.

He lacked pace when tracking back, allowing several Brighton crosses to evade him easily. His return to the right side will be welcomed for the derby.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

The captain was pivotal in attacking situations, attempting to set up Sesko whenever possible. However, his frustration with the club's turmoil was evident.

Fernandes came close with two well-executed free kicks before halftime but was a bit off in other dead ball situations.

Matheus Cunha – 5

The Brazilian appears to be in need of a break. He hasn't been impactful lately, despite scoring against Leeds at the start of the year.

At 26 years old, he was more effective on the left after a lackluster performance on the opposite side in the midweek draw at Turf Moor. He struggled once again.

Benjamin Sesko – 6

The 22-year-old provided a spark with several impressive runs, but he remains inexperienced in front of goal.

He made a poor attempt at a lob early on and was caught offside three times in the first half. He should take finishing tips from former United striker Welbeck.
