But with one turn, swivel and shot he showed why the Red Devils paid all those millions to lure him from Chelsea.

Mount’s goal 18 minutes from time was the equaliser for United on the night, after Mikel Jauregizar opened the scoring in the first half with a terrific curling effort.

Atletic Bilbao pressed for a way back into the tie but had no luck, and Ruben Amorim’s side began to dominate after half-time.

A 4-1 aggregate lead meant the tie was effectively over when Casemiro stooped to head in from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick – his second goal of the tie.

Rasmus Hojlund even got in on the act, tapping home from close range after the returning Amad tiptoed his way into the area and fired across a low cross.
