Former Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has identified the ideal manager to succeed Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
He believes that Andoni Iraola has demonstrated that he could be the perfect candidate for the position.
Manchester United invested over £170 million in new players during the summer of 2025, acquiring talents such as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon.
United’s current performance has raised questions about Amorim’s future as they prepare to return to Premier League action against Sunderland this weekend.
Numerous top managers have been associated with the Red Devils’ position, including bookmakers’ favorite Oliver Glasner and former England manager Gareth Southgate. United has also been reported to have an interest in Bournemouth manager Iraola, who is under contract at the Vitality Stadium until 2026.
Foster is confident that Iraola possesses the qualifications needed to succeed at Old Trafford.
“Iraola is the one for me. To lose half your squad, half your starting lineup, and still maintain impressive performance indicates that you’re a genuine coach,” Foster shared on The Cycling GK podcast.
“However, if they are looking to secure Iraola or Glasner, it will require a significant financial investment.
I know Glasner’s contract expires in the summer, but he will likely demand £250,000 per week as a salary, and they [Palace] will seek some form of compensation, won’t they?”
“I just believe that with Gareth Southgate, it’s a stark contrast to what they’ve done previously, and their current approach isn’t yielding results,” he added.
“When you examine the last four or five managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left, it’s evident that things aren’t working, plain and simple.
“Considering the immense pressure of playing for Manchester United and the weight of that jersey, it appears that a different strategy might be necessary.”
