Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, has stated that the situation involving former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, illustrates to Nigerians in public office that power is temporary.
Moghalu remarked that public office in Nigeria has increasingly become disconnected from competence, ideology, and values such as integrity.
In a post on X, the former CBN deputy governor emphasized that it is up to the court to determine Malami's guilt or innocence.
In response to reports linking Malami’s wealth to the loot of Sani Abacha, Paris Club refunds, and the CBN's agricultural loan, Moghalu stated: “By now, anyone in public office in Nigeria should recognize the fleeting nature of power, particularly in a country where public service has progressively become detached from competence, ideology, or core values like integrity.
“When individuals act in office as though tomorrow will never come, the hunters may soon find themselves as the hunted. This is merely a general observation and not a “conviction” of Mr. Malami.
“Let the courts determine his guilt or innocence, and let us hope this does not turn into yet another alleged corruption case without a genuine resolution.
“However, it was somewhat peculiar when the central bank increasingly transformed into the “Central Bank of Agriculture” under the notable central banking expert Mr. Emefiele.”
This development follows the arraignment of Malami and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz, before the Abuja Federal High Court on charges of money laundering on Tuesday.
Malami, Abdulaziz, and another individual pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charge of alleged money laundering.
They were arraigned on accusations of unlawful acquisition and concealment of funds.
