Two major motorways have come to a standstill due to a cattle truck accident and an oil spill, resulting in significant delays for drivers.

The M1 is closed northbound between Junction 23 and Junction 23a following a collision involving a cattle trailer.

Additionally, two lanes are closed on the M56 westbound between Junction 12 and Junction 14 due to a lorry overturning yesterday evening.

Drivers are facing delays of more than 90 minutes due to a diesel and oil spill on the motorway.

Currently, there are seven miles of queues approaching the lane closures, according to National Highways.

They have stated that a sweeper and a sander are en route to address the spillage, and the road will need to be evaluated for resurfacing afterward.

In a post, National Highways mentioned: “Lanes 1 & 2 (of 3) remain closed on the M56 westbound between J12 (Runcorn) & J14 (Elton) for emergency works to address an oil and diesel spill.

“There are 90-minute delays above normal travel time with 7 miles of congestion on approach.”

Travelers on this section of the motorway are encouraged to allow extra time for their journey and consider alternative routes.
