The Southampton star, who was only 18 at the time, scored as the Lionesses won 3-2 at Ravenscraig Park.

She was later allocated the No7 in the nation’s Leagacy Numbers.

Reflecting on her life and career, chair Debbie Hewitt said: “I am so deeply saddened to learn of Lynda Hale’s passing.

“Whenever we talk about the success of our Lionesses in recent years, it is always with rightful recognition of those special players who paved the way.

“Our first ever No7 and a goalscorer in the first official match for England women, Lynda will always be remembered for the part she played in our football history.

“On behalf of everyone at The FA and all connected to the Lionesses, our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

England will wear black armbands in their opening qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday night in memory of Hale.

The winger was also a seven-time winner with Southampton Women, an independent side unaffiliated to the WSL2 outfit

The club will honour her at their home game against Wycombe on Sunday.

Chairman Aaron Smith said: “This heartbreaking news has hit our club and community hard. Lynda was one of the pioneers of women’s football, a player and person that helped create what it is today.

“Representing our wonderful club and England, she has brought joy to the area.”
