The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has announced that it will soon begin an enforcement exercise called “Show Your PSP Payment Receipt” in Apapa-Iganmu areas of Lagos State.
The exercise is meant to address the issue of illegal waste dumping by checking whether residents and business owners are paying for waste collection services through their assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this known on Saturday during a monitoring visit along the Lagos-Badagry transit corridor.
According to him, the operation will involve regular checks in homes, shops and business premises, where occupants will be asked to show proof that they are registered with a PSP operator and that payments are up to date.
“This initiative is designed to tackle the root causes of indiscriminate waste disposal by verifying property-level compliance with PSP waste collection payment obligations,” he said.
Gbadegesin explained that the exercise would help LAWMA identify properties that do not have valid waste collection arrangements and close service gaps that often result in illegal dumping and waste build-up in certain areas.
He noted that keeping the environment clean is everyone’s responsibility, stressing that effective waste collection depends on the cooperation of residents and the accountability of PSP operators.
“Environmental compliance is a shared responsibility, and consistent waste collection depends on both resident participation and operator accountability,” he stated.
The LAWMA boss advised residents and business owners in Apapa-Iganmu to regularise their PSP payments and ensure proper waste storage before the enforcement exercise begins.
He added that the operation is part of LAWMA’s efforts to improve waste management and promote a cleaner environment in Lagos communities.
