But his introduction was not enough to turn the tide in his teams’ favour, trudging to a goalless draw to kick their tournament off.
He was spotted in the stands following the result alongside friends and family as he looked to put the game behind him.
And chief among the efforts to console him was his girlfriend, Spanish influencer and model Ines Garcia.
The 21-year-old , and has since travelled to the US to follow her new man at the tournament.
She shared a number of snaps watching on from the crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
She sported a Spain kit with Yamal’s name on it for the event, as did the rest of his entourage in the stands.
The starlet only played the last 20 minutes of the Group H clash, but that won’t lessen the blow of the draw.
Spain dominated 62 per cent of the possession, but could not find a way through the defence with any of their 23 shots.

That was in part thanks to the heroics of 40-year-old keeper Vozinha, who after keeping a clean sheet with seven saves.
