The Lagos State Government has successfully rescued a woman suffering from mental illness who was accused of causing disturbances in a residential area in Agege.
Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, confirmed the intervention in a statement shared on his verified X account on Friday.
He stated that officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team promptly responded after receiving reports from residents and successfully removed the woman from the community for medical evaluation and rehabilitation.
This government action was prompted by a viral video circulating on social media, which featured a visibly distressed resident appealing for immediate assistance regarding the woman’s alleged violent behavior.
In the video, the unidentified individual claimed that the woman, who reportedly lives at No. 31 Adedosu Street, Agege, had been throwing stones at homes and threatening residents with dangerous weapons, including a machete and a knife.
The video raised significant concern, with many Lagosians urging the government to act quickly to ensure the safety of the neighborhood and provide care for the mentally ill individual.
In response to the situation, Commissioner Ogunlende confirmed that the woman had been safely taken to one of the state’s designated care centers.
“She has been taken to one of our centers for care.
I encourage the public to continue reporting similar incidents that require government intervention. We remain dedicated to ensuring social stability and safeguarding vulnerable individuals throughout Lagos,” Ogunlende stated.
He also emphasized that the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to maintaining public safety while prioritizing the welfare of all residents, especially those in vulnerable situations.
The Ministry of Youth and Social Development also urged Lagos residents to report cases involving mentally unstable individuals or social emergencies through its official helplines for a prompt response.
