The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has defended the selection of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as the consensus candidate for the role of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lawal stated that the decision adhered to due process and was in accordance with the party’s constitution, which recognizes consensus as a valid method for selecting leaders.
Earlier in the week, Northern PDP leaders endorsed Turaki during a meeting in Abuja that was attended by Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Lawal, and the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
However, some stakeholders from the North-West PDP opposed the decision, claiming that the governors had excluded them from the meeting.
Responding on Friday during the inauguration of the accreditation subcommittee for the party’s upcoming national convention, Lawal remarked that disagreements are a natural part of politics.
“Regardless of our actions, some individuals will still feel dissatisfied. It is an aspect of politics,” he said.
He emphasized that the endorsement of Turaki was in line with the PDP constitution and aimed at fostering unity among members as they approach the national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“Our party's constitution includes a provision for consensus. Therefore, this is not a novel approach. It is part of our system,” he added.
Lawal expressed confidence that the PDP would address its internal challenges and emerge stronger ahead of the convention.
