The Lagos State Government has encouraged residents to engage in its Cash for Trash initiative, a waste-to-wealth program aimed at promoting recycling while maintaining a clean and environmentally sustainable city.
This initiative, overseen by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), allows residents to earn money by recycling materials such as plastics, cans, and bottles.
In a statement and video shared on Monday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through his official X account, the program aims to minimize waste pollution and foster climate-conscious practices within communities.
Wahab noted that residents are compensated every Thursday for delivering recyclable waste, and added that LAWMA’s Recycling Team has been actively engaged in various neighborhoods, including Lagos Island, to illustrate how recyclables can be converted into cash.
He stated, “Did you know your trash can be transformed into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is present in Lagos Island, demonstrating to communities how to make it a reality!”
“We reward residents every Thursday for assisting us in keeping Lagos clean and green. It’s beneficial for your wallet and advantageous for our city. Get involved and discover the value in your waste.”
A video accompanying the post features LAWMA officials weighing bags of sorted plastic waste on portable scales and distributing cash payments to participants.
