The Lagos State Government has initiated the distribution of compensation to residents affected by the ongoing urban renewal and regeneration project in Oworonshoki, located in the Kosofe Local Government Area.
The compensation process, which started on Thursday, October 23, 2025, has been recognized as a demonstration of the administration's commitment to harmonize infrastructure development with social responsibility.
During a well-attended event held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, stated that the compensation was the result of a thorough verification, engagement, and enumeration process conducted in collaboration with community stakeholders.
Animashaun explained that the regeneration project was essential due to the prevalence of illegal and deteriorating structures throughout Oworonshoki, many of which were built on waterways and drainage pathways, posing environmental and safety risks.
“Oworonshoki is one of the communities identified under the state’s comprehensive urban renewal and regeneration initiative. Numerous affected buildings were deemed unsafe and environmentally unsuitable. Nonetheless, in line with the inclusive governance policy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state committed to compensating verified residents, and today, we are fulfilling that promise,” he remarked.
Animashaun commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership and commitment to enhancing the living conditions of Lagos residents, describing the compensation initiative as a testament to transparency, fairness, and accountability in urban management.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, for their unwavering support in ensuring the project's success.
The event was graced by representatives from the Oworonshoki traditional council, Community Development Associations (CDAs), the Community Development Council (CDC), civil society organizations, security agencies, and members of the press.
