Kebbi senators’ defection: Ex-AGF Malami under pressure to join PDP

Published on May 14, 2025 at 06:12 PM

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), is under intense pressure to dump the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

Daily Post gathered that a delegation of PDP stakeholders visited Malami at his residence on Tuesday, urging him to consider joining their party as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the PDP in the state.

The pressure on Malami follows the defection of three prominent PDP senators: Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Senator Garba Musa Maidoki (Kebbi South), who switched allegiance to the APC.

Their defection was formally announced at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday.

The defections have heightened internal tensions within the APC, particularly within the camp of Governor Nasir Idris, who is reportedly unsettled by Malami’s growing political activity.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted for several hours, was described as “strategic”;; by one of those who attended and spoke with our reporter on condition of anonymity.

Malami’s recent meetings with political actors, youth groups, and stakeholders across the state have not gone unnoticed, fueling speculation about his next political move.

A party source within the PDP told Daily Post that Malami is being considered for a possible governorship ticket.

“We are reaching out to capable leaders who can help rebuild the state. Malami is someone we believe can change the game if he comes on board,”;; the source said.

This isn’t the first time Malami is being linked with alternative platforms.

Recent reports indicated that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had also made overtures to him, offering a direct ticket as part of its 2027 strategy.

Although Malami has remained silent on the offers and has not declared any political ambition, insiders say he is keeping his options open while monitoring the evolving dynamics within the APC and across the state.
