The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State has raised alarm over the prevalence of child rights violations, revealing that out of 446 human rights complaints received between April and June 2025, 351 cases involved infringements against children.

The NHRC Kano State Coordinator, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, disclosed these figures while briefing journalists in Kano.

He also revealed aside from the child rights cases, the commission also documented 19 incidents of domestic violence, 18 complaints relating to economic and social rights, and five cases involving the right to life. Other complaints ranged from witchcraft accusations to various forms of abuse and neglect.

Abdullahi noted that the majority of violations occurred within domestic and matrimonial settings rather than by state actors. Only seven of the total reported cases were attributed to government officials.

He stressed that any violation within the family unit will ultimately reflect on the wider society,”; he said. “When there is gross violation of rights within the family, there can be no meaningful development in the larger society.”;

Abdullahi also disclosed that the commission had successfully investigated and concluded 341 of the complaints, while 105 cases remain pending.
