JJ SPAUN’s wife cheered him to BMW PGA Championship glory on Sunday – while wearing a Jeremy Clarkson mask.
Former US Open champion Spaun, 36, took the win by two shots at Wentworth after Manuel Elvira’s double-bogey on the last.
In doing so, Spaun became only the third American to win the tournament.
But it took some British inspiration to get him over the line.
It turns out that Arizona-born Spaun is a huge fan of and his popular TV show, .
He was hoping for a meet-and-greet with the former presenter during this latest trip to the UK.
And when he did not get one, devoted wife Melony delivered the next best thing by following him around Wentworth armed with a cardboard cut-out of Clarkson’s face on a wooden stick.
Spaun said: “We’ve grown fond of him, along with the English culture. We actually take in December in the Cotswolds, and we really enjoy his show.
“I went to his pub, The Farmer’s Dog, with the hopes to catch a glimpse of him but he wasn’t around.
“So Melony said we would have a surprise guest following this week if I competed in the tournament, and sure enough, Thursday morning, I see the face of and her holding it.
“Jeremy was there in spirit and I think he brought me good fortune. He is a big reason why we’re here.”
Spaun picked up a cool £1.1million for his first title outside of his home country, and could splurge some of that on his traditional pre-Christmas break in the Cotswolds, where Clarkson’s pub is located, later this year.
