Former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has linked the recent rise in insecurity across the country to politically motivated individuals both within and outside Nigeria.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kalu stated that the trend of attacks resembles what happened during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming that certain individuals take advantage of election periods to exert pressure on the government.
He mentioned that some members of the international community, in collaboration with local partners, are “orchestrating” acts of terrorism and banditry to undermine the current administration.
Kalu argued that recent comments from international figures, including US President Donald Trump, have exacerbated discussions regarding insecurity in Nigeria.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated a commitment to tackling the issue, noting that the President canceled all engagements on Sunday to concentrate on national security following recent abductions.
He stated: “What we are witnessing is predictable, something that accompanies elections. When elections approach, people will attempt to pressure the government in power to create various situations. You may recall that similar occurrences happened during President Jonathan's time; a lot of pressure was placed on him.
“The terrorists and bandits are being orchestrated by certain members of the international community and local individuals who genuinely wish to destabilize the government.
“These are not unusual events, but I am confident that President Tinubu is up to the challenge. For the first time, we see the President canceling all his engagements.
“Today is Sunday, and he is focusing on security challenges. He is addressing all security matters. Those girls will be rescued. Those individuals in schools will be recovered. The government is making every effort to ensure their safe return.
“The current situation is exacerbated by a few announcements, both internationally and locally, discussing insecurity in Nigeria. I am certain this is not the best time for us. It’s a difficult period for the Nigerian people and citizens; our service chiefs and security personnel are fully engaged in addressing the situation. It is a challenge. The primary role of government is to protect lives and property, and this will be upheld.
“This is politically motivated. You can see that this has been happening repeatedly over the past few months. We remained silent until President Trump spoke about the killings in Nigeria. Furthermore, there are discussions about the 2027 election.
“These individuals are, in fact, mercenaries employed by politicians. These people are hired by certain individuals. They are aimed at destabilizing a president who is committed to fighting for our economy and revitalizing it.”
