A non-governmental organisation, NGO, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, has called on President Bola Tinubu and all the state governors to redouble their efforts in securing the country, pointing out that the primary responsibility of any government is to secure its citizens and their properties.

The group, reacting to the fresh wave of insecurity in the country, which has spread to Plateau, Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kwara States, called on federal and state government, especially, in the Northern region to adequately protect their territories.

In a statement signed by the MMWG’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Yusuf Agbabiaka at the end of a special meeting held in Abuja, the group particularly appealed to President Tinubu to cause the Nigeria Police to make annual recruitment into the Force and training of their human capital more holistic than it is presently doing.

According to the NGO, “manpower problem and training as well as equipment have been part of the serious problems the Police is facing presently.”

MMWG wondered how Nigeria still faces serious security problems with more than 27 security agencies operating in the country, and therefore called for “a re-appraisal of their activities as national intelligence to secure this country has failed.”

It, however, accused the Plateau State Government of promoting insecurity by using its Ministry of Justice to frustrate prosecution of serious criminal offenses featuring loss of innocent lives.

The group made particular reference to the murder of Rtd Major-General Alkali seven years ago of which the suspects have been granted bail, adding that the same reportedly happened to the 13 wedding guests that were murdered in Mangu Local Government Area of the state few weeks ago, whose assailants were reportedly granted bail by a Plateau State High Court.

In both cases, MMWG alleged that the DPP of the state’s Ministry of Justice have been perverting cause of justice by recommending bail for murder cases; querying when such crime became a bailable offence in the Nigerian legal system.

Similarly, it berated the Plateau State Government of “suppressing justice in the case of the killing of members of Ondo State Muslim delegation in Jos while returning from Bauchi after annualDhikr with Sheikh Tahir Bauchi,” wondering why the state has become so notorious for killing people both indigenes, travellers and guests.

The group then called on the Federal Ministry of Justice and the National Judicial Council, NJC to probe all the criminal cases and try to know how Plateau State Government has been handling them.
