The Niger State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and development partners, is accelerating efforts to reunite and resettle over 500,000 residents displaced by insecurity in Borgu Local Government Area, many of whom are scattered across Kebbi State, Kwara State, Kogi State, Kaduna State, the Federal Capital Territory, and neighbouring Benin Republic.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made this disclosure during a presidential initiative for the distribution of food, nutritional items, and essential drugs to vulnerable residents in Borgu.
He said, “frantic efforts are underway to ensure that these people return home as soon as possible. We are working tirelessly with the federal government and development partners to make this a reality.”
Bago added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the Borgu National Park be cleared and made habitable, including the establishment of permanent bases for all security agencies, to address the rising insecurity caused by criminal elements.
Appealing for patience and understanding, the governor stated, “The provision of food items by the federal government is a demonstration of concern for our displaced citizens and provides them immediate relief during these challenging times.”
The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, commended the governor for his leadership and tireless commitment to the welfare of his people, saying, “Governor Bago has consistently shown concern for the people of Borgu, particularly those affected by insecurity. I urge our people to exercise patience as government at all levels works round the clock to ensure peace and safety.”
The Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, also expressed appreciation, noting, “the governor has done well in ensuring peace returns to Borgu Emirate. The federal government will continue to support these humanitarian efforts.”
Other dignitaries, including the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Council, Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, and the Jikadan Borgu, commended both federal and state governments, while highlighting that the gesture would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of residents who have lost their livelihoods.
The highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of food items to selected beneficiaries across Borgu Kingdom, providing relief and hope to families affected by the crisis.
