Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, has stated that the primary challenge confronting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is political rather than technical.
Itodo expressed these views on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television, which was observed by DAILY POST.
“The main issue for INEC is political, not technical, and it stems from political interference with the electoral commission.
“When considering the appointment process, it is a constitutional issue. There are suggestions that the president's powers should be curtailed, which we strongly support as part of the new INEC campaign.
“However, I honestly doubt that this specific provision will pass—the proposal to remove the president's power. I believe it will face significant obstacles for several clear reasons.
“It would require a statesman serving as president to amend the constitution in a way that diminishes his authority to appoint INEC officials,” he remarked.
