The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has registered about 3,000 voters living with disabilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of the upcoming Area Council elections.

The information was shared by the Head of INEC’s ICT Department in the FCT, Mr. Festus Aisien, during a visit by the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) to the Commission’s office in Abuja.

According to a statement posted on INEC’s official X account on Friday, the figure shows the Commission’s effort to make sure people with disabilities are not left out of the electoral process.

Mr. Aisien said INEC remains committed to creating an election environment where everyone, including Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), can register and vote without difficulty.

During the visit, the Chief Executive Officer of the Inclusive Friends Association, Mrs. Grace Jerry, praised INEC for working with disability groups for more than 10 years to improve inclusion in elections.

However, she said more needs to be done, especially in training election officials, security personnel, and political party agents on how to properly engage and assist voters with disabilities during elections.
