The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has urged the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to focus on the genuine interests of the nation and strive for democratic consolidation.

The acting National Chairman of the SDP, Dr. Sadìq Gombe, made this recommendation in a statement issued by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, on Friday in Abuja.

Gombe noted the nationwide enthusiasm surrounding Amupitan’s appointment and the widespread acknowledgment of him being the right choice by the president. The SDP hopes that he will bring genuine joy to Nigerians in practical ways.

He expressed the party's anticipation that Amupitan will prioritize the true interests of Nigeria and work towards democratic consolidation, especially in the upcoming off-cycle gubernatorial elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states.

According to him, these three state elections will serve as crucial tests of his capability in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Gombe stated that with Amupitan's impressive background, esteemed reputation, integrity, and competence—qualities affirmed by Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi at the Council of State meeting—the SDP is hopeful that the current national enthusiasm will translate into tangible achievements.

He expressed confidence that Amupitan will perform his duties with integrity and honor, building upon the significant reforms initiated by his predecessors.

“We hope that the new chairman will prioritize the rule of law, respect the autonomy of political parties, and ensure that the commission remains uninvolved in their internal matters during his tenure.

“We expect him to foster a positive environment by boosting staff morale, improving the negative public perception of the commission, and enhancing its credibility,” he added.
