INEC confirms 129 party applications, launches digital portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reported receiving a total of 129 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties.

The update was provided during the Commission’s regular weekly meeting held on Thursday.

A statement signed by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, revealed that seven new applications were submitted in the past week, bringing the total to the current figure.

“At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties.

“Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,”; INEC stated.

The Commission also announced the launch of a new digital platform for registering political parties.

The platform, which forms part of the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System, is designed to simplify and streamline the registration process.

Olumekun stated that final testing of the portal is expected to be completed within the coming week.
