Former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, states that the execution of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police personnel from VIP escorts will require time, emphasizing that the process is more intricate than it seems.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, in a segment monitored by DAILY POST.
Akande clarified that while the directive is currently being implemented, its complete execution will not happen quickly.
“Clearly, the presidential directive to withdraw police from VIPs and VVIPs is, I believe, already in progress,” he stated.
“In practice, it will take some time for it to be fully enacted.”
Akande mentioned that conversations with security experts and active police officers suggest that an immediate withdrawal is impractical.
“There are specific cases where individuals were granted police protection due to threats or documented situations,” he elaborated.
“Some of these individuals are foreign investors operating in the country who view such protection as part of the incentives. Therefore, it is quite complicated.”
He acknowledged the President’s stance that police officers should prioritize community security, but insisted that the transition must be managed with care.
“We may require a more gradual transition because even when you withdraw, the Inspector General of Police mentioned about 12,000 personnel.”
“Are they prepared? Are they ready for immediate deployment? Do they possess the motivation? Are they adequately equipped? Are they even trained?”
Akande stressed that while reform is essential, its success will hinge on addressing logistical, operational, and personnel readiness challenges within the Nigeria Police Force.
