The Imo State Government has officially reinstated the Imo State Traffic Management Agency (ISTMA) to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations among road users.
The agency's revival, which had been on hold for several years, was made possible by its recent inauguration led by the Commissioner for Transport, Emeka Okoronkwo. He urged the new management to perform their duties compassionately while maintaining order on the roads.
The inauguration of the new ISTMA teams took place at Arugo Motor Park along Onitsha Road in Owerri and was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Mrs. Moneme Judith, the Head of Transport, and other key stakeholders.
In his address, the Commissioner announced that ISTMA would now be the exclusive government agency tasked with traffic control and management in the state.
He stressed that this new operational phase aims to build a cooperative relationship with drivers while rigorously enforcing traffic regulations, especially in sensitive locations like the Assumpta Cathedral–Control Post flyover.
Okoronkwo explained that enforcement measures became necessary after the state government prohibited the indiscriminate loading and unloading of passengers and goods around the Flyover. This action aims to protect the newly commissioned infrastructure and ensure smooth traffic flow in the area.
“The initiation of this operation is crucial for guaranteeing safe road usage and safeguarding vital infrastructure such as the Assumpta Flyover recently inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he stated.
The commissioner also revealed that the ministry has established three public distress phone lines for feedback and complaints regarding the conduct of ISTMA officials, warning that any misconduct or abuse of duty would result in strict disciplinary action.
Okoronkwo commended Governor Hope Uzodinma for his dedication to modernizing transport infrastructure and emphasized that the Governor values drivers as essential contributors to the state’s economy.
During the event, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Imo State Sector, Mr. David Egejuru, urged ISTMA operatives to be courteous, disciplined, and law-abiding.
He reminded them that road safety is a collective responsibility and advised against alcohol consumption, aggression, or infringing on motorists’ rights.
Commercial drivers and transport operators in the state expressed their happiness over the reestablishment of the agency, describing the newly appointed management team as approachable and understanding.
They expressed hope that order and sanity would once again characterize traffic management in the state capital as the agency resumes its role as a liaison between the government and road users.
