The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has denounced the arrest and ongoing detention of journalist Ibrahim Ishaq Danuwa Rano, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

Danuwa, the founder of Danuwa Rano TV, was reportedly apprehended by police officers from the Zone One Command in Kano due to an online audio commentary.

In this audio, he allegedly accused a government official of accepting payments from individuals wishing to meet the state governor.

CITAD noted that the journalist did not name anyone in the commentary; however, it was later claimed that the Director-General of Protocol to the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, lodged a complaint that resulted in his arrest.

In a statement signed by Executive Director Y.Z. Ya’u on Sunday, the organization characterized the arrest as an act of intimidation and abuse of power aimed at silencing journalists and constricting civic space in Nigeria.

“This action by the police is not only unjust but also a troubling indication of intolerance towards free expression and accountability,” CITAD stated.

“Freedom of expression and media independence are safeguarded by the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights agreements, and must not be violated under any circumstances.”

The organization emphasized that the police should serve as protectors of rights, not as tools of oppression, underscoring that detaining a journalist for performing his duties undermines democracy and discourages investigative journalism.

“We urge the Nigeria Police Force and the Kano State Government to release Ibrahim Danuwa Rano unconditionally and to cease the harassment of journalists who speak truth to power,” the statement continued.

CITAD also called upon civil society organizations, media groups, and human rights advocates to unite against the escalating suppression of press freedom in the country.

“A society that silences its journalists denies its citizens access to truth and accountability,” Ya’u remarked.

The group reaffirmed its dedication to defending digital rights, freedom of expression, and the safety of journalists in Nigeria, pledging to continue advocating against repression and censorship.
