Beloved Venue Secures Two-Year Extension for Hosting the British Grand Prix!

THE iconic Silverstone circuit will continue to host MotoGP’s British Grand Prix, it has been confirmed.

But ahead of the 2026 race, organisers and MotoGP chiefs confirmed the iconic motorsport venue would continue to host the motorbike series for two more years through to 2028.

Silverstone took over the reins as the host of MotoGP’s British Grand Prix from Donnington in 2010 following a 24-year absence.

It has welcomed more than two million fans in that time, though that is a far cry from the sort of numbers the track welcomes for Formula One – with the 2026 race in July attracting a record 564,000 fans over the weekend.

MotoGP, now owned by ‘s owners Liberty Media, has some way to go to generate similar interest in its product.

However, Britain’s rich heritage in motorsport remains unquestionable, a point raised by MotoGP CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta.

Speaking on the announcement, Ezpeleta said: “The UK has a rich motorcycle racing heritage and remains one of the most important markets for MotoGP.

“Since returning to Silverstone in 2010, we have built a strong partnership and together delivered some unforgettable British Grand Prix weekends.

“Silverstone provides a fantastic stage for MotoGP, eleven different winners in the last eleven Grands Prix hosted at the circuit is a testament to the quality, competitiveness and unpredictability of racing at the circuit.

“This extension gives us the opportunity to keep investing in the event, strengthen our presence in the UK and create even more value for our fans, teams, partners and promoters over the coming years.”

Silverstone CEO Stuart Pringle added: “This extension underscores our commitment to two-wheel racing.

“It’s not just about signing a contract; it’s about reaffirming our vision. Silverstone has proven its capability to host the pinnacle of global motorsport — from MotoGP to Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

“This renewed partnership secures our place as the UK’s undisputed home of elite international racing.

“Extending our relationship is confirmation of our shared commitment to delivering the ultimate high-speed experience for fans here in Britain.”

Speaking at a press conference in London on Thursday, riders also expressed their delight at the extension.

Great Britain’s three-time MotoGP race winner Cal Crutchlow, and also the series’ last race winner since Barry Sheene – who was today inducted into the sport’s Hall of Fame before the press conference – said of Silverstone: “It’s a great circuit, one that holds many memories for me.

“And if there’s a section of the circuit that I love, it’s the Maggots-Becketts section.

“It’s hard work on a MotoGP bike, but once you get it right, it’s one of the greatest sections of a circuit anywhere in the world.”

Crutchlow, 40, is the sole British rider on the grid, and he is only currently there as a replacement for injured LCR star Johann Zarco, who is expected back in September.

In both 2016 and 2017 Crutchlow came close to winning, but this time around he isn’t holding out much hope of taking the chequered flag.

Asked about his chances of winning, he said: “How many are on the grid? Twenty-two? Twenty-one miracles. He needs a miracle; I need twenty-one.

“Yeah, it’s not going to happen, mate. I’ll just be honest. But I’ll try, of course, I will try.

“We’re all there, you know. There’s always a chance. If you’re on the starting grid, there’s always a chance.”
