The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, stated that Nigeria deserves elections where the defeated candidate will congratulate the victor.

Amupitan made this remark on Thursday during his screening by the Senate, just prior to his confirmation.

He mentioned that he would review the Electoral Act to enhance the integrity of Nigerian elections.

The Law Professor emphasized that there are discrepancies in the election timelines in Nigeria, a situation he believes can be improved.

He asserted that fair elections would rebuild voters' trust.

“We aim to ensure that elections are credible, so that the defeated candidate will acknowledge the winner by saying, ‘You won fairly and justly’,” he said.

“If we can achieve this, it would be akin to a judge convicting someone, sentencing them to death, and the convict saying, ‘Well done, because I believe I have received justice,’” the new INEC chairman elaborated.

According to DAILY POST, Amupitan was confirmed by the Senate after more than two hours of questioning on Thursday.
