FACING a lifetime behind bars, some criminals break down and cry in the dock or keep their head bowed and their eyes firmly on the ground.
But when I sat opposite predator police officer David Carrick behind a pane of glass in Southwark Crown Court, his reaction surprised me.

He was due to be sentenced for offences including 24 counts of rape – making him one of the UK’s worst sexual offenders.
Thirteen women had come forward with reports of horrific abuse, and faced with overwhelming evidence, had pleaded guilty to 49 charges.
But despite admitting crimes, the former gun cop appeared calm as he sat to await his fate.
Instead of looking down, he stared straight ahead – right at the press benches which were filled with journalists.
He remained almost emotionless as Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb described his offending to him as an “unrestrained campaign of rape and abuse of women”.
She told him: “These convictions represent a spectacular downfall for a man charged with upholding the law and empowered to do so, even to the extent of being authorised to bear a firearm in the execution of his duty.
“Behind a public appearance of propriety and trustworthiness you took monstrous advantage of women drawn into intimate relationships with you.
“You brazenly raped and sexually assaulted many women, some you barely knew. You behaved as if you were untouchable.
“You were bold and at times relentless, trusting that no victim would overcome her shame and fear to report you. For nearly two decades you were proved right.
“But now a combination of those twelve women, by coming forward, and your police colleagues, by acting on their evidence, have exposed you and brought you low. You have lost your liberty, your job, and your status.
“You have before you, the prospect of a difficult time in custody for many years.”
Last year, against two more women
and now serving 37 life sentences, and is likely to die in prison.
The Sun told this week how he has now launched an appeal against one of his convictions, bringing his horrendous crimes back into the public eye.
I have met and spoken to two women who have been abused by Carrick and their bravery in coming forward never fails to impress me.
Carrick abused his position in the police to torture , and if they threatened to report him, he would brag: “I am the police.”
Even when he was arrested in his underwear at his house in Stevenage, he appeared baffled that he would be treated that way, telling those handcuffing him: “I’ve been a police officer for 20 years”.

The monster would brag to his victims ‘I am the police’
In bodycam footage of his arrest the fiend can be seen arguing with officers, asking them: “What is it you’re searching for?”
When told, the naked cop responds: “For f***’s sake, I have only been a police officer for 20 years.”
He then asks “do you want me to come naked like this?” before an officer offers to get his stuff.
The arrest was made in October 2021 after a woman claimed Carrick met her when they met on Tinder.
Although the charge was dropped after he pleaded not guilty, the publicity sparked a wave of allegations that put an end to Carrick’s gruesome crime spree.
A landslide of other women came forward to share their testimonies of being assaulted by him physically, mentally, and sexually for years.
After his conviction it emerged that the police had , but instead allowed him to carry on his campaign of abuse while working for the Met.
Carrick worked for the force’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command unit – the same department as Sarah Everard’s killer .

The gun cop, whose colleagues branded “B*****d Dave”, degraded his victims, forced them to clean his house naked, locked them under the stairs, and hit them with belts.
He would abuse his position in the police to abuse them, telling them: “I’m a police officer, you can trust me”.
One of the women I spoke with told me how he had sexually assaulted her before pushing her into the shower and urinating on her.
When she found out he had been jailed, she told me she hopes he “rots behind bars” for the rest of his life.
Last year Carrick was subsequently charged with abusing two further women, a 12-year-old girl in 1989 and 1990 and a woman he abused while a serving police officer.
Both women had come forward after Carrick was convicted in 2023.
The monster, from Stevenage, pleaded not guilty to the charges and refused to give evidence in his defence.
In November, Carrick was found guilty of five counts of indecent assault relating to a 12-year-old girl in 1989 and 1990 and convicted of two charges of rape, one of sexual assault and one of coercive and controlling behaviour towards the second victim.

During his sentencing hearing, Mrs Justice McGowen said he had failed to accept responsibility and blamed others, adding: “I have no doubt that you are dangerous.”
At the time, Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Iain Moor, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said the case was about ensuring the victims’ voices were finally heard.
He said: “I hope they can now move on with their lives and continue with their recovery. I also hope this goes some way to repairing the devastating impact that David Carrick has had on trust and confidence in policing.”
Carrick’s appeal process is in the very early stages, and will next go before a single judge who can decide whether it has merit to progress.
Meanwhile, the former cop remains in HMP Full Sutton, a high security jail near York.
He had been left unchecked to carry out his campaign of abuse against so many women for more than 30 years.
With him now locked away, his victims can now at last be certain they are safe from him.
