Chairman of United Bank for Africa, UBA, Tony Elumelu, has schooled a graduate trainee who addressed him by his first name during the induction of 5,000 newly recruited staff of the bank.
The incident occurred during the induction programme when one of the new employees took a microphone to speak and referred to Elumelu simply as “Tony.”
Elumelu, apparently surprised by the manner of address, asked the trainee to correct herself.
However, she repeated the name “Tony” when given another opportunity to address him.
In a video of the incident that has gone viral on social media, Elumelu explained his preference for being addressed respectfully, noting that he does not subscribe to what he described as “Oyinbo” culture.
The exchange has since generated reactions online, with social media users debating workplace etiquette, generational differences and the appropriate way to address senior executives in Nigeria’s corporate environment.
