The chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has refuted claims suggesting that he labeled the current tax regulation as fake, stating that his remarks were misinterpreted.
Oyedele provided this clarification on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, in response to allegations that key provisions of the tax law had been modified.
He elaborated that during a media interview, a reporter pointed out discrepancies between sections of the law as published in the official Gazette and a harmonized version attributed to the National Assembly, inquiring whether these differences constituted alterations.
According to Oyedele, prior to this interview, he had encountered reports claiming that several sections of the law were significantly altered, creating the impression that these claims originated from a House of Representatives committee investigating the matter.
However, he expressed his skepticism after noticing that one of the cited sections did not appear in the Gazette. He revealed that he reached out to a lawmaker who was said to be part of the investigating committee, who informed him that the committee had not convened.
He stated: “First of all, in your opening comments, I have seen quite a bit recently that I said the regulation in circulation is fake. That is not what I said. During the interview, the reporter displayed a section of the law in the Gazette alongside a similar section quoted in the harmonized version by the National Assembly, and asked me if that was indeed an alteration.
“Before that, I had seen reports about various sections that they claimed were substantially altered, and the reports implied that these were from the House of Representatives committee investigating the matter.
“I observed one of the sections, which I will show you now, and I knew it was not in the Gazette, while they claimed it was. So I contacted one of the lawmakers on the committee to clarify, and he said they hadn’t even met.
“It seems that some individuals decided to create a narrative about alterations they believed were made, and this did not come from the investigating committee. Some people have added graphic design elements on top of it. Therefore, my response was that I don’t think it would be productive to discuss alleged alterations whose origins are unknown, and certainly not from the House committee. Yet, some have reported that I claimed the Gazette in circulation was fake. That is not what I said.”
