A railway worker who courageously protected passengers during the mass stabbing incident on a Huntingdon train has been released from the hospital.

Samir Zitouni, 48, was in critical condition after the horrifying event on board the LNER train traveling from Doncaster to London on November 1.

He reportedly used a frying pan from the buffet carriage kitchen to prevent the attacker from reaching other passengers.

He sustained multiple stab wounds and was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after heroically intervening to save lives.

His family stated: “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support from the public and deeply touched by all the kind words regarding Sam’s brave actions during the attack.”

“While we are thrilled to have him back home, he still faces a significant recovery process, and we would appreciate privacy as we care for him as a family.”

David Horne, managing director at LNER, expressed: “In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate to step forward to protect those around him.

“His actions were incredibly courageous, and we are proud of him, as well as all our colleagues who acted with such bravery that evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam and his family. We will continue to provide them with support and wish him a swift and complete recovery.”

Samir was among 11 individuals injured when the attacker struck shortly after the train departed from Peterborough station.

The driver halted the train at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, allowing armed police to respond.

Politicians have endorsed proposals to honor Samir's bravery by advocating for him, along with passenger Stephen Crean, to receive the George Cross.

This medal is awarded for “acts of the greatest heroism or the most conspicuous courage in situations of extreme danger.”

Upon reviewing the onboard CCTV footage, it was stated that Samir’s “actions were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many lives.”

Over 40,000 people have signed a petition urging that the father receive the George Cross.

The petition reads: “His actions exemplified the best of humanity.”

Colleague Gemma Royce revealed that a GoFundMe page has raised over £36,000 for Samir and his family.

She shared last week: “His wife has shared the wonderful news that Sam briefly woke up yesterday, and she was able to converse with him for a short period.

“This is a genuinely positive step forward, although there remains a long journey ahead in his recovery.”

Samir’s wife Eleni remarked: “Sam is a kind and brave individual who holds a deep belief in humanity.

“On November 1, Sam acted as a shield to protect the lives of others, risking his own return to his beloved son.

“This is who Sam is — he would do the same for anyone, regardless of color, age, gender, religion, or origin, even for those he does not know. Sam is our hero.”

Anthony Williams, 32, from Peterborough, has been charged with attempted murder, ABH, and possession of a bladed article in connection with the incident.
