A MONSTER earthquake has struck near the Panama Canal as tsunami warnings have been issued for Central and South America.
The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 7.6, with tremors reported along the southern coast of the South American country.
The epicentre has been located at 120miles from Panama City, with witnesses saying they felt the shakes.
The famous Panama Canal – an artifical 82km waterway – neighbours the capital.
The quake has triggered the US tsunami warning system, with hazardous waves possible along the coasts of CostaRica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Savador and Mexico.
